Product Details

Merlin, a prominent figure in Arthurian legend and renowned as King Arthur's adviser, magician, and prophet, is the second mythical character to be featured in our three-coin bullion series inspired by the legend of King Arthur.

Merlin's origins can be traced back to Geoffrey of Monmouth's pseudo-historical work Historia Regum Britanniae (The History of the Kings of Britain), where he is associated with Arthur's father, Uther Pendragon, rather than the legendary king himself. However, as time passed and the Middle Ages progressed, Merlin gradually became linked with King Arthur, particularly in American literature and popular culture.

Renowned artist and illustrator David Lawrence has portrayed Merlin against the backdrop of Glastonbury, which is rumored to be the inspiration for the mystical isle of Avalon. Perched on Merlin's shoulder is an owl, symbolizing his wisdom and knowledge. He firmly grasps a magical stave, while a golden sickle hangs from his belt, representing his use of mistletoe in the sacred grove.
